Happy Hallowe'en!

"Spirits of the Dead"

Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone;
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy.

Be silent in that solitude,
Which is not loneliness - for then
The spirits of the dead, who stood
In life before thee, are again
In death around thee, and their will
Shall overshadow thee; be still.

The night, though clear, shall frown,
And the stars shall not look down
From their high thrones in the Heaven
With light like hope to mortals given,
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever.

Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish,
Now are visions ne'er to vanish;
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more, like dew-drop from the grass.

The breeze, the breath of God, is still,
And the mist upon the hill
Shadowy, shadowy, yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token.
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries!

Sunday Morning Classics.

Edward Elgar
(2nd Jun. 1857 - 23rd Feb. 1934)

Good morning everybody. The weather has, at long last, begun to take a turn for the cooler here in Chicago and I couldn't be happier. Case in point it is currently a brisk 56 degrees out.

For this blissfully chilled Sunday morning we have as our classical selection Edward Elgar's "Enigma Variations Op. 36." This is a wonderful piece of music that has been a favourite of mine for many many years. In Mr. Elgar's own words on the piece, "I have sketched a set of Variations on an original theme. The variations have amused me because I've labelled them with the nicknames of my particular friends ... that is to say I've written the variations each one to represent the mood of the "party" (the person) ... and have written what I think they would have written - if they were asses enough to compose." Enjoy!

Best,
Brion
